Pest control

Small hive beetle control

Small hive beetle is a constant problem for Queensland beekeepers, and warm, humid weather favours it. Beetles hide in corners and gaps, lay eggs in the comb, and in a weak colony their larvae can slime out a hive quickly. Strong colonies manage beetle numbers themselves; traps help keep the pressure down, especially across an apiary.

Beetle catcher traps

Reusable transparent plastic traps that sit between frames inside the hive. Beetles chased by the bees take refuge in the trap and cannot get out.

PackPricePer trap
10$29.99$3.00
25$69.99$2.80
50$129.99$2.60
100$199.99$2.00

Getting more from beetle traps

  • Check and clear traps at each inspection — a full trap stops working.
  • Place traps where beetles gather, usually toward the outer frames and corners.
  • Keep colonies strong. Traps support a strong colony; they will not save a weak one.
  • Avoid leaving extracted supers or comb stacked where beetles can reach it.

Feeding

Feeding across an apiary

Feeding many hives at once — through a dearth, when building up colonies, or after making splits — needs feeders that are quick to fill and easy to check. Top feeders sit on the hive, so they can be refilled without opening the brood box.

2L round top feeders

PackPricePer feeder
2$29.99$15.00
5$69.99$14.00
10$134.99$13.50
25$299.99$12.00
50$399.99$8.00

At 50, a feeder costs almost half what it does bought in pairs.

Shop top feeders

Feeding many hives efficiently

  • Feed in the evening to reduce robbing between hives.
  • Feed every hive in a yard at the same visit, so no colony is left drawing robbers.
  • Clean feeders between uses to stop syrup fermenting or growing mould.

Hive equipment

Hive components

Every hive in an operation needs the same core parts, so components are where buying for the whole apiary at once saves the most time.

Queen excluders

Galvanised metal excluders keep the queen in the brood box so honey supers stay free of brood. One per hive.

10 frame galvanised excluder $29.99. For quantities, ask us for volume pricing.

Bottom boards with varroa surveillance

Mesh bottom boards with a removable board let you monitor mite drop without opening the hive — a straightforward way to keep watch across a whole apiary.

10 frame bottom board $59.99.

10 frame double beehive kits

Complete flat pack NZ pine hive kits for expanding hive numbers, with a choice of mesh or plain bottom board. From $132.99.

Recurring equipment

Frames and foundation

Frames get broken in the field, damaged by beetles, and culled when old comb needs replacing. For a working apiary they are a recurring cost, and one where buying in quantity pays.

How many frames per hive

A 10 frame box holds ten frames and an 8 frame box holds eight. A double-storey 10 frame hive needs 20 frames, and each extra super adds ten.

Flat pack or assembled

100 full depth framesPer frameWhat you still do
Flat pack with eyelets$2.00Assemble, and wire for wax foundation
Assembled and wired$3.25Fit wax foundation
Assembled with plastic foundation$3.80Nothing — straight into the box

Using plastic foundation? Flat pack frames plus foundation sheets come to about $3.50 a frame before any assembly. Fitted frames are $3.80 — about 30 cents more for no assembly at all.

Harvest workflow

Harvest and processing

At commercial volumes, honey handling equipment wears out and gets duplicated across extractors, tanks and buckets. These are the parts working apiaries replace most often.

Stainless steel honey gates

Fit to extractors and settling tanks for controlled flow.

PackPricePer gate
1$34.99$34.99
5$139.99$28.00
10$199.99$20.00

At 10, a gate costs 43% less than buying one. Shop stainless honey gates

Honey gate valves for buckets

Plastic valves for honey buckets and smaller containers. From $4.75 each in packs of 20. Shop honey gate valves

Filtering

Most honey is filtered in stages — a coarse strainer to take out wax and debris, then a finer filter before bottling.

  • Double layer stainless steel filter — coarse and fine mesh in one, sits over a bucket. $44.99. Shop filters.
  • Grade 90 cheesecloth — food grade, reusable, for finer straining. From $10.00 a cloth. Shop cheesecloth.

Seasonal teams

Gear for your crew

You may not wear a suit any more. Your seasonal staff will.

Casual workers and new crew members have not built the tolerance an experienced beekeeper has, and a stung new starter on day two is often a lost worker on day three. Jackets, replacement veils and gloves are available in quantity for teams.
