Beehive boxes and honey supers for Australian apiaries

An 8-frame box is narrower and normally lighter than a comparable 10-frame box when full. A 10-frame box holds more frames in each level and is widely used across established Langstroth apiaries. Either format can work well when the entire setup remains consistent.

• Choose 8-frame: when lower filled lifting weight and a narrower footprint are priorities.
• Choose 10-frame: when compatibility with an existing 10-frame apiary and greater capacity per box matter.
• Do not mix formats: lids, bases, excluders and boxes should match the frame count.

Full-depth and ideal honey supers

Full-depth boxes can be used for brood or honey depending on the management system. Ideal supers are shallower, reducing the weight of each filled box and giving beekeepers more flexibility during honey flows. Frames and foundation must match the selected depth.

Add a super according to colony strength, existing frame occupancy, local nectar flow and weather. Extra space added too early can make temperature and pest management harder for a small colony.

New Zealand pine and dovetail construction

Selected OZBEE flat-pack boxes use New Zealand pine and dovetail-style joints. Timber products should be assembled square with suitable fixings and prepared for outdoor exposure according to the listing. Paint or protect only the stated surfaces and allow finishes to cure before installing bees.

Flat-pack, assembled and painted options

Flat-pack boxes reduce transport volume and allow the beekeeper to complete assembly. Assembled and painted boxes save workshop time and may be available with optional frames. Check whether frames, foundation, lid, base or other hive components are included, because a box-only listing is not a complete hive.

Nucleus boxes

Five-frame timber or corflute nucleus boxes support splits, temporary colony housing, queen work and transport workflows. Nuc boxes have limited space and require active monitoring. Confirm ventilation, entrance security, frame depth and intended duration of use.

Bulk boxes for growing apiaries

Multipacks of 5, 10, 25 or 50 boxes and pallet quantities can streamline expansion when one format is standardised across an apiary. Plan dry storage, assembly capacity, timber protection, frames and foundation before ordering a large quantity.
